One thing the State of Israel is excellent at is preparing for yesterday’s war.
On October 7, we saw that clearly:
Israel recognized the threat of cross-border tunnels in retrospect during Operation Protective Edge (2014), and subsequently decided to build the barrier (2017).
The problem is that, once the threat was exposed, Hamas understood that cross-border tunnels were something Israel was preparing for. So it upgraded to a new threat: an above-ground raid. Once again, we only understood it in retrospect.
Exactly the same mistake is now being made on the northern front.
In the agreement taking shape, Israel is seeking to push Hezbollah back from the border because of its serious concern about a raid by the Radwan Force.
The problem is that, even as we speak, the Radwan Force already understands that an October 7-style raid is yesterday’s threat. At this very moment, it is probably changing its mission to prepare tomorrow’s threat for us.
This agreement is bad in every conceivable way, and we must oppose it.
It amounts to falling into Hezbollah’s trap. Hezbollah will probably change its raid strategy anyway, having realized that Israel is preparing for it. Moving away from the border and preparing a different kind of threat is therefore exactly what it wants right now.
